Freakin' On Fibre
I have officially become old. I'm excited about the possibilities of soluble fibre.
I am becoming a prophet of psyllium, preaching the righteousness of rice, freedom through flax, and the colon-calming capabilities of quinoa.
Over the last year I discovered that many issues that plagued me both mentally and physically were the result of digestive imbalances. Out went dairy, sugar, and wheat. Gone were fruit, many veggies, and anything with vinegar or yeast. I improved greatly but continued having reactions. More foods were fingered and discarded. By the end of December, it seemed there were a scant few items I could safely eat, and my food journal made no sense. I was reacting to anything and everything. I could eat something one day and be fine, then eat it another day and be plunged into the depths of hell. Then I heard about Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
It's got a bit of an amusing ring to it ('Don't bother trying to talk to Colon before he's had his morning coffee - yeesh!'), but you just don't realize how much you depend on those fifty feet of intestine until they decide to go on strike.
At any rate, after several days of eating only small amounts of broth and fruit, and a gut clenched so hard I could have made diamonds, I found some web info on soluble fibre and IBS. I braved a big bowl of quinoa and within an hour was feeling looser than my grasp of the French language. Today - one flax/banana/cranberry smoothie & a bowl of rice later - I still feel great. Move over Rover, because fibre is my new best friend.

Psyllium can be bought in bulk at most organic or health food stores. I buy a particular brand from Innovite which costs a bit more, but bulks much better when added to water, which is how I take it, 1/2 hour before meals (or 2 hours after). I believe you can also get it in capsules.
The big difference is between soluble and insoluble fibre. For IBS, soluble is your dearest friend. Insoluble can be friend or foe depending on how you're doing.
Good to know I may also be lowering my cholesterol. Perhaps it'll balance out that stint on Atkins...
