Day One

My first yoga session ended up being delayed until today as I arrived at the studio last night to find I'd misread the schedule. I overslept for the 8 am class, and wasn't quick enough to make the 10 am, so the 3:30 session it was.

The 90 minutes went by surprisingly quickly, and I don't feel nearly as sore as I thought I would. The heat was less severe than I expected as well. I was expecting the heat and humidity of a sauna, something near tropical, but it was only about half that. Perhaps I wasn't pushing hard enough. I did learn two things, however. One, I have a lousy sense of balance. The postures that had us balance on one foot left me wobbling and hopping in a rather graceless, non-tranquil manner, particularly as my legs grew tired. Secondly, I am not a flexible guy. Just call me Anti-Gumby. The stretches did feel good, however, and the severe tension I was feeling in my neck, upper back, and arms has largely released. As my friend Tom remarked, yoga is a self-massage.

Four hours later, I'm tired and sore in the way you are when you've done a good day's work. My head is clearer and I feel like I might actually get in a good, natural night's sleep.

For $20, I got a week's unlimited access, so I think I'll take advantage of that and try going daily. We'll see if I make it for 10:00 tomorrow.
